That's been going on for a while. I remember my dad rear ending a bug in his 240 sedan that had pulled out right in front of him. The hood collapsed, the drivetrain and engine went down under the passenger compartment, the wheels came off, etc. Not a single window was broken in the passenger cage, it all looked normal from the inside (except that the steering wheel spun free.) Dad was totally fine.
The bug, not so good. The engine ended up in the front passenger seat (lucky for the driver) with multiple injuries for the driver. Nothing was the same for that car, it was completely deformed.

Same thing happened to a family member of mine, but he was in a Saab 9000 and the other guy in a Fiat 500, poor thing got destroyed in some alpine road.
